In aquaponics we use the ammonia given off by the fish to create nutrients for the plants. The plants then take the nutrients they need to grow before the water returns to the fish.
It's a perfectly symbiotic relationship.

Hydroponics is growing plants without soil. By using nutrients dissolved in water you can give the plants everything they need to thrive, outside of sunlight.
